Holistic Treatments for Acne

By: Scott Meyers

Most people that suffer from acne rely on creams and topical agents to get rid of their acne. The non-prescription items fill shelves on the pharmacy counter, while the prescription aids can have severe side-effects and must be monitored closely by a doctor. Some of these creams and pills should not be taken by people already taking hormones, or who may be pregnant.

Most acne problems are caused by a buildup of toxins in the body, particularly in the colon and lymphatic systems. Acne, like most diseases, starts from a digestive system imbalance. In order to cure acne problems, we must address imbalances in the digestive system and fix the problem at the source.

Most people have never stopped to consider the natural treatments available to them. Of all the holistic treatments for acne, herbal treatments and reflexology show the most promise for long-term relief.

Tea Tree Oil is a natural antibiotic and antiseptic. You can use it as full strength oil diluted in warm water and apply as you would a commercial astringent, or use one of many tea tree oil soaps. Tea tree will kill any bacteria or virus it comes in contact with. You could also try eucalyptus oil or thyme infused wash, which have a similar effect.

Lavender is one of the best herbs to use topically in the essential oil form. Lavender is a natural antibiotic and antiseptic.

Sage is antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral. It has natural tannins, camphor and rosmarinic acid, all of which help repair skin.

Papaya enzymes help to exfoliate and unclog pores. Papaya also promotes healthy skin cell growth, softens and smoothes the skin. For increased benefit, try adding the chewable form to your diet as well.

Burdock root and dandelion leaves cleanse the liver. They also contain inulin, which helps remove bacteria from the skin.

Milk thistle and red clover helps the liver cleanse the blood and lymphatic system.

Reflexology stimulates the lymphatic system and encourages the release of endorphins; natural feel good hormones to our entire system. Reflexology is based on the belief that applying pressure to reflexes on the feet and hands can effectively treat the entire body. By stimulating nerves on specific areas of the feet and hands, reflexology stimulates blood flow and eliminates toxin buildup in the corresponding organs and systems of the body.

Although reflexologists cannot diagnose or claim to cure a sickness or disease, the results speak for themselves, making it one of the most sought after treatments today. In fact, celebrities pay an arm and a leg for just a few minutes of reflexology. Not only is it beneficial as a tool for relaxation and stress relief, but it is also an effective tool for improving circulation; relieving pain, and as an immune and nervous system stimulator. Many people with illnesses like allergies; chronic sinus problems; acid reflux; acne; migraines; PMS; menopause; insomnia; fertility problems and even arthritis have been helped tremendously by reflexology treatments.

No matter what your physical or emotional condition may be chances are you will benefit after just one treatment. Many people will go through a course of treatment in order to cure acne problems once and for all.

Natural Acne Treatment – Allicin

When a customer comes into my shop to find a cure for their acne, one of the first things I ask them about is their diet.

I firmly believe that your skin is an indicator of your inner health and well-being – and diet plays a major role in this.

Unfortunately, for a whole host of reasons, few people eat what is considered to be a balanced, healthy diet.

Processed foods, refined sugar, saturated fats, coffee and alcohol all play havoc with your digestive system.

One of the primary roles of your digestive system is the elimination of toxins and waste. When it becomes overloaded it looks for alternative ways to get rid of this waste – and the favourite is through your skin via the sebaceous glands.

Additionally, your whole system becomes a perfect environment for “unfriendly” bacteria that produce yet more toxins that have to be eliminated through your skin – leading to blockages of the sebaceous glands. And, of course, once these glands become blocked, they in turn become breeding grounds for even more bacteria – leading to inflammation and pimples.

Now, back to treating someone with acne………

Having explained about the importance of your diet and how, simply by making a few changes, you can see an improvement in your condition, my first suggestions for natural acne treatment is Allicin.

Allicin is the “active” part of raw garlic and has anti fungal, anti bacterial, anti microbial and anti biotic properties.

Unfortunately, in its natural state it degrades extremely quickly and heating and processing garlic speeds up this degradation. Because of this, most garlic oil capsules contain no Allicin (however, they do contain other sulphur based compounds that are very effective for cardiovascular health).

The good news is that one company has managed to isolate and process Allicin in a powder form that can be taken to help alleviate your acne symptoms.

As a natural acne treatment, Allicin has the ability to kill Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus species and Candida albicans – bacteria that infect your sebaceous glands and worsen the clinical symptoms of acne. Additionally, it has a mild natural acidity that has been shown to be protective and guard against bacterial overgrowth.

Allicin is available as AllicinMax capsules and AllicinMax cream and I suggest the following treatment regimen:

For mild to moderate acne, take one capsule twice a day at mealtimes for 4 weeks – for more severe outbreaks, take two capsules twice a day. At bedtime, add a dab of the cream to each pimple (you can smell the garlic in the cream, but this is offset to a great degree by honeysuckle that’s been added).

With regular use, significant results should be seen within 2 weeks and once the 4 weeks are up, if you then take one capsule a day as a maintenance dose, it will act as protection against any further bacterial outbreaks.

It is worth noting that Staphylococcus aureus – one of the bacteria responsible for acne infection – is the same one that’s present in MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus) and, even though this type is anti-biotic resistant, Allicin has been found to kill it!
